A Model for Monetizing Creativity
Via ClickZ, Microsoft has developed a model to allow game developers to earn a rev share on the games they develop by earning a cut of advertising revenue. The Evil Marketer has said before that there should soon be a day where there are far fewer starving artists, and this is another step in that direction. I’m sure you don’t want your content and entertainment peppered with ads, but with a combination of decent behavioral targeting, branding, and product placement, the ads should be fairly unobtrusive and more relevant. And it allows anyone with a bit of talent in game design, graphics, writing, film making, etc, a chance to earn an income that is in direct relationship to the level of their talent — or at least the popularity of what they do, which are usually different things.
